What is Counselling?

Counselling is a way of supporting people to deal with difficulties.  It involves talking with a counsellor about issues in their lives.  Counselling takes place in a confidential setting.  It is normally a shorter term approach than psychotherapy lasting from weeks to several months.

Counselling can help people improve their sense of wellbeing and self confidence: alleviate distress; resolve crisis’s and increase the ability to solve problems and make decisions.

Many of us use counselling skills in our daily lives by listening, being sympathetic and understanding.  We also need support from partners, friends, colleagues and family members. Sometimes those we reach out to may find it difficult to be objective.  Speaking to a trained professional can give the space to explore difficulties, feel heard, understood and find solutions.

Counselling works more effectively with people who already have a sense of wellbeing; are able to solve problems and make decisions but need help to resolve a crisis or difficulty.
